Knowledge:
innovation, research and teaching
Health care organizations accumulate a tremendous
potential for improving thewellbeing of society. In the
current circumstances, innovation, research and teaching
are essential in order to be able to build the health care
model of the future. In a changing and uncertainworld,
these three pillars of knowledge provide us with the
main oases of certainty for winning the future.
“I would encourage the future
generation of physicians to enter
medicine for the traditional ambitions
of using their intelligence and skills to
comfort and cure the sick.”
Sir Roy Calne
Guest speaker at the third conference of the
Alexander Fleming Cycle, organized by PSMAR.
Innovation
High level of application of ICT
The PSMAR acute care centers (Hospital del Mar
and Hospital de l’Esperança) have been classified at
level 6 (in a range of 0 to 7) of the Electronic Medical
Record Adoption Model (EMRAM), a category that
includes only four centers in Catalonia. This level
acknowledges the effort made by the institution, not
just in digitizing the clinical information and medical
images, but also in using the computer systems as a
support tool for decision-making.
Virtual hospital - a teaching simulation tool
The Virtual Hospital has been implemented - this is
an innovative teaching tool created and developed at
the Institut Bonanova with aid from the Ministry of
Education and Science through the European Social
Fund. Taking part in this project were three more
centers of professional health care training from
Navarre, Basque Country and Andalusia, companies
such as SAVAC Consultores (software development),
Drim and Educabits, and the Catalan Health Care
and Social Consortium. The Virtual Hospital allows
students and teachers to work on databases and
computer systems just like in the real environment of
a general hospital.

Research
Increased scientific production
Scientific production at the Hospital del Mar
Institute for Medical Research (IMIM) has increased,
allowing it to maintain visibility (mean impact factor
of indexed publications). It holds second place in
most of the qualitative and quantitative indicators
among state health care research institutions, as
shown in the latest report of the Spanish Foundation
for Science and Technology (FECYT), based on the
SCImago Institutions Ranking. This report compares
international research centers using different
bibliometric indicators such as the number of
citations per document, publications in the first
